HERE WE GOOOOOOOOO!!! … toward unwarranted anger about a children’s movie.
In a special streaming event on Tuesday, Nintendo unveiled
its second trailer for Illumination’s forthcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie, due
to arrive in theaters in April.
The trailer features a lot of what you’d expect from a
second trailer following our first look at the film back in October. We get
more of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach, Jack Black’s Bowser, Charlie Day’s
Luigi, plus our first glimpse at the film’s version of Donkey Kong (voiced by
Seth Rogen in some of the most inspired voice casting of all time).
But there’s surely much to be said – and not much of it positive, I bet – about Chris Pratt’s Mario, which is a more grounded take on the character when
compared to the iconic voice work of Charles Martinet, who has voiced the
character in video games since 1996’s Super Mario 64. you can
call me a shill, an apologist or maybe just a moron, but I can’t bring myself
to channel the frothing anger some people have leveled at Pratt and Illumination
for this portrayal. Heck, I even chuckled at Pratt’s “let’s-a go” delivery in
the trailer. Maybe I’m easily amused in my old age, or maybe I’m really happy
that we’re getting a Mario movie that features kart racing, nods to Super Mario
Galaxy and unexpected mustache torture. It’s the little things, fam.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits theaters on April 7, 2023. Watch the trailer below!
