Farewell, Leonard Nimoy

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I was never really into Trek, save for those memorable 4th of July marathons that used to air locally on WPIX 11 in New York. Yet, in my later years, I came to appreciate Star Trek: The Original Series in a real way, especially in terms of its historical importance to the science-fiction genre. It also doesn't hurt that, even now, the show is a lot of fun.

Much of that fun can be attributed to Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock, the perfect logic-based foil to William Shatner's impetuous Captain Kirk. Spock's popularity has transcended the Star Trek franchise itself, and you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone, sci-fi fan or otherwise, who isn't familiar with the character's "Live long and prosper" phrase and accompanying hand gesture.

Today, Mr. Nimoy voyaged to the great beyond, at the age of 83, due to pulmonary disease. Instead of mourning, I choose to celebrate the life of one of the standard-bearers of geekdom. Enjoy Nimoy's "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins," a song that makes me smile a little bit wider right now.

The 'Arkham Knight' Trailer Pretty Much Rules

The Internet is abuzz right now about a blue and black dress (or is it white and gold?), but my favorite thing online this week was easily WB Games' "Gotham is Mine" trailer for Batman: Arkham Knight, which hits consoles on June 2. Not only does the preview show off the stunning graphics of Rocksteady's conclusion to the Batman: Arkham Trilogy, but the huge role The Scarecrow will have in the anticipated title. Sure, Dr. Crane was a huge part of the first game in this franchise, Arkham Asylum, but he's never quite been portrayed as being this powerful outside of the comics before. I dig it.

Regardless of how you feel about the quality DC's comics and movies these days, their TV (Arrow and The Flash) and particularly their video games have been on point. Check out the latest trailer for Arkham Knight below.

Jason Momoa Definitely Looks Like Jason Momoa and Not Aquaman

It's weirdly fitting that on the first Friday of Lent, we get our first look at the cinematic version of DC's fishiest superhero, Aquaman, as he will appear in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, coming next year. This doesn't really look like the character any more than it looks like Game of Thrones' Khal Drogo holding a giant novelty fork. However, I guess it's important that Warner Bros. try its best to make Aquaman looks as "badass" as possible, since he's undeservingly the most joked-about DC hero this side of Arm-Fall-Off-Boy.

Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Sure Looks Like Deadpool

Earlier today, Ryan Reynolds tweeted the following photo, giving us an early glimpse at how The Merc with a Mouth's mask will look in Fox's forthcoming Deadpool film, due to hit theaters one year from now. Break out the chimichangas, guys. So far, so good.

Thwip! The Amazing Spider-Man Comes Home

Man, why did news like this have to drop on a Monday night? Don't studio execs know I was working?

If you've gotten eyes on a computer or a smartphone screen in the last 24 hours, you already know that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have reached an agreement to share Spider-Man, meaning that the Wall-Crawler will be swinging alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the rest of the The Avengers in the very near future.

Marvel.com has the full press release on this amazing development, but here's what we know:

• The new Spider-Man will debut in a forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which The Wall Street Journal has confirmed to be Captain America: Civil War.
• After the all-new Spidey appears in the MCU, Sony will release its next Spider-Man film on July 28, 2017. The new film will be co-produced by Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and Sony's Amy Pascal.
• Sony will continue to finance, distribute, own and have creative control over the property.
• Characters from the MCU might appear in Sony's Spider-Man films.

So what does this mean? Well, it seems like we'll get yet another Spider-Man movie reboot, its second in just 13 years. It also means that the continuity of Sony's Spider-Man films will fit in line with Marvel Studios' flicks, so Spidey will be a part of that shared universe with Sony still being able to take ownership over the franchise. It's the ultimate win-win for our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Who's going to play Peter Parker? Will we have to sit through yet another origin story? Will Spidey play an integral role in Captain America: Civil War, as was the case in the comics? The questions continue to mount in the wake of this announcement. Yet, if one thing's certain,  it's a damn good time to be a True Believer. 

Netflix 'Daredevil' Series Looks Pretty Fantastic

Showcasing the dark and gritty corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Daredevil will hit Netflix on April 10, but you can get your first look at the anticipated series with its first teaser trailer below. The brief promo features narration by Matt Murdock himself, Charlie Cox, with some interesting action shots of the character in an early version of the Daredevil costume. We only get brief glimpses of the rest of the cast in their respective roles, but if a teaser is about generating conversation and establishing a mood, this trailer pretty much nails it. What do you think?

Meet 'Jurassic World's' New Dinosaur

This year's Super Bowl was loaded with depressing adverts full of absentee fathers and, at worst, dead children, but one of the most crowd-pleasing commercials came early on in the game as viewers got a brand-new trailer for this summer's Jurassic World. In the 1:10 spot, we get a better look at the velociraptors tamed by Chris Pratt's character, a massive pterosaur attack and several glimpses at the park's genetically-engineered predator, the "Indominus Rex." It's awesome, and unlike many of the commercials you saw on Super Bowl Sunday, it probably won't make you ponder your own mortality or weep in front of loved ones.
