The Buy Pile for Oct. 2, 2013

Tonight marks the conclusion of my first vacation in more than a year — seven days of comic books, horror movies, Breaking Bad binge sessions and excessive amounts of Grand Theft Auto V. I know many of you are sucking your teeth at me for not taking this opportunity to do some traveling, but I had business to take care of in Los Santos … Paris can wait.

My regular Wednesday trip to Stamford, Conn.’s A Timeless Journey netted me a relatively light haul, but that doesn’t mean I was in any way disappointed with this week’s new offerings. Marvel’s “Battle of the Atom” still has me hooked despite the time-travel weirdness, and there’s definite promise in DC’s Forever Evil book, which hints at big things to come next month. I’m also thoroughly entertained by Glen Brunswick’s Reality Check over at Image Comics, which released its second issue this week.

Here’s a rundown of what I’m bagging and boarding this evening:
  • Captain America: Living Legend #1 (Marvel)
  • All-New X-Men #17 (Marvel)
  • Iron Man #16 (Marvel)
  • Batman: Detective Comics #24 (DC)
  • Batman: Black and White #2 (DC)
  • Forever Evil #2 (DC)
  • Reality Check #2 (Image)

The Buy Pile for Aug. 7, 2013

Happy Wednesday, Wortmaniacs! How’s your week going?

Oh, wow. That bad, huh? Well, if it makes you feel any better, there’s a slew of new comics that just hit the racks, so that should help you get through the next couple of days … unless you’re not into comics at all, in which case you’re probably here by accident and stopped reading at “Wortmaniacs.” So why am I still talking to you? This is awkward.

Anyhow, below is a list of what I’ll be reading tonight whenever I’m not completely distracted by Shark Week on Discovery. I really like the bitey parts.

  • Iron Man #14
  • All-New X-Men #5
  • Deadpool Kills Deadpool #2
  • Detective Comics #23
  • Green Lantern #23

Wow, September Already?

Greetings, Wortmaniacs! I know, I know. You’ve missed me. My updates have been fairly sporadic since July and I’m not posting nearly enough to sustain anything resembling interest in this blog. But the fact is I’ve been incredibly busy at work tackling new responsibilities—which will include a great deal of travel—and I’m trying to enjoy something resembling a personal life when I don’t have my nose to the grindstone. To steal a line from Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around for a while, you could miss it.”

This might seem like something resembling a “final post,” but it’s the furthest thing from that. I plan on continuing to update The Wort Report as much as possible, with the caveat being that “as much as possible” might mean I’m going week or two without new content. That’s the reality I’m trying to adapt to.

So instead of an abundance of smaller, time-sensitive posts about the latest nerd news, I might publish more long-form updates about things I’m doing, comics I’m reading, games I’m playing, movies I’ve seen and what TV shows I don’t have time to keep up with.

With that being said, it’s time for me to start wrapping this up so I can dig into the four No. 1 comics DC put out today as part of their “New 52” relaunch. I skipped last week’s Justice League, but I’m looking forward to checking out the new Action Comics, Detective Comics, Swamp Thing and Batgirl. Yeah, that’s right. I’m reading Batgirl. Screw you and your judgment.

Anyhow, I hope everyone’s having a great week. Speaking of this week don’t forget that X-Men: First Class hits DVD and Blu-ray on Friday! This film is definitely worth a first-day purchase, but if you’ve been reading my gushing posts about it all summer, you already knew that.

Batman Beats Superman at Auction

A near-mint copy of Detective Comics #27 (1939), Batman’s first appearance, just sold for $1.075 million. The sale broke the comic book auction record set just days earlier with the $1 million sale of Action Comics #1 (1938), the first appearance of Superman.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s official: Batman is better than Superman.

The record-breaking sale was made online via Heritage Auction Galleries, and the comic’s buyer is not yet known.
